Can't Do Without

Aug 11, 2010

If Francis Chanyou were to narrow it down, what is that one thing you can’t do without?  Commenting on his latest book, Forgotten God, Francis Chan says “he wants to live a life unexplainable without the Holy Spirit, so dependent on the Spirit that, he says, if he doesn't come through, I'm screwed.”  Before you start drawing your own conclusions about this statement, allow me to expound.

Francis Chan, a successful pastor of a megachurch for 16 years, recently left his post stepping out in faith to follow where God leads next.  This book makes a compelling argument that Christians in general have admired the power of the Holy Spirit but have failed to harness his power.  I’ve followed Francis’ ministry over the years and have heard him numerous times at seminars and conferences.  His transparency about his personal walk with God convince me that he is the “real deal”, and that you can trust his heart.  But even more so, you can trust the One who, after all, was promised to be “another Helper” [as in Jesus, the ‘other’ one] who is to “teach you all things.”  Note that the verse in John 14 doesn’t say ‘just a few’ or ‘certain’ but ALL things.

To say that your life, or life on planet earth in general, is complicated is such an understatement.  Life as we know it—personal or global—is getting more complex, or even bizarre by the minute.  God is more than just a handy reference or a personal guru.  Through the Holy Spirit, he can be that plus so much more, giving you everything it takes to make it through this life and into the next.  There’s just no way you can do without him!
